| Year: | 1845 | |
| Denomination: | 2 1/2 rappen | |
| Description: | Widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful stamp issues, the 'Basel Dove,' issued by Switzerland's Canton Basel, was the first to be printed in three colors. The stamp features a white embossed dove in flight with a letter in its beak, superimposed on a red shield against a blue background. Canton Basel was the third (and last) of Switzerland's Cantons to issue its own stamps. As beautiful as they were, however, postage stamps never gained popularity among the Swiss, and were withdrawn. | |
