| Description: | Despite its appearance, the British Guiana is recognized as the world's most valuable rare stamp. Only ONE specimen exists. A provisional stamp, it was issued in Demerara, British Guiana when a supply of regular stamps failed to arrive. The provisional issue was so primitive and poorly produced that the postmaster, fearing a wave of forgeries, had the typeset plates initialed by an official. The initials of assistant postmaster E.D. Wight (E.D.W) appear at the upper left corner of the stamp. The Stamps were trimmed roughly into a rough octagon shape. The seal of the colony - a ship with the motto 'Damus Petimusque Vicissim' - is the primary design feature. Additional wording that appears on the stamp includes the colony's name and the value of the stamp. Check out our story of this stamp in the Gnome gNews Stand. | |
